Symetra Life Insurance Company today announced that Jasyn Sadler has been hired to lead the actuarial function for its expanding group life and disability income insurance business.

As assistant vice president of Group Life and Disability Actuarial, Sadler will be responsible for pricing, valuation and modeling of Symetra’s group life and disability income products. Based in South Windsor, Conn., he will report to David Fry, vice president and lead actuary for the company’s Group Division.

Most recently, Sadler has served as president and founder of Chapin Solutions, an independent consulting practice specializing in group disability. Previously, he was vice president and actuary of Benefit Solutions at American International Group, heading up life and disability pricing, product management and reserve valuation. From 1999-2006, he held a variety of actuarial positions at The Hartford Insurance Company in the Group Benefits Division and Institutional Solutions Group. He started his career at CIGNA as an actuarial student.

A leading provider of medical stop-loss coverage, Symetra announced plans in January 2011 to expand its group life and disability income insurance operation by building in-house capabilities and focusing on mid-sized businesses. With Sadler’s appointment, Symetra’s group life management team is now complete. Since the beginning of this year, Symetra has hired Tom Foran to lead the group life management team and direct product development efforts; Don Canfield to head up underwriting; Lora Lyons to run claims and operations; and Christopher Koettker, Andrew McMillan and Steve Mezei to drive field sales.

“From actuarial science to strategic planning to product development, Jasyn brings broad industry experience to our group life and disability growth initiative,” said Tom Foran, vice president, Group Life and Disability. “With our management team now in place, we look forward to expediting our plans to deliver a value-added suite of group life and disability products to employee benefits brokers and third-party administrators.”

Sadler is a graduate of Drake University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science and Finance. He is a fellow of the Society of Actuaries and a member of the American Academy of Actuaries.
