Supervalu: Small-Cap Winner

NEW YORK ( TheStreet) -- Supervalu ( SVU) was a prominent gainer in the small-cap space Thursday, after its fourth-quarter profit topped expectations.

During the quarter, the grocer earned $95 million, or 44 cents a share, compared with $97 million, or 46 cents, in the year prior.

Shares spiked 13% in noon trading to $10.25. Volumes were approaching 30 million on the NYSE.

Shares of India's largest broadband services provider Sify Technologies ( SIFY) were witnessing unusual volume activity. Shares were rising 15% to $6.22, while volumes were approaching 6 million in afternoon trading. Average three-month volume has been under a 100,000.

Also gaining was another Indian internet portal Rediff.com ( REDF). Shares were climbing 14% to $9.36.

Shares of CAMAC Energy ( CAK) were climbing 9% to $2.04 after an independent study estimated its total resources in two of its blocks in Nigeria were significantly more than expected.

Data storage device company Quantum ( QTM) saw its shares rise 5% to $3.26 on news that NetApp will begin selling storage and file-management software from the company under a new agreement.

Silver miners were up on higher silver prices. Shares of Great Panther Silver ( GPL) and Endeavour Silver ( EXK) were up 4% and 3.3% respectively.
