NEW YORK ( TheStreet) -- Hewlett-Packard ( HPQ - Get Report) considered buying Tibco Software ( TIBX) until two weeks ago when the talks petered out, Reuters reported, citing two sources familiar with the matter.

Tibco, a maker of business software, had been working with its financial adviser Goldman Sachs to explore the opportunity, the sources told Reuters.

It wasn't clear why the talks fizzled or if they will be resumed, Reuters reported.

Hewlett-Packard has been examining the industry to beef up its software division, the sources said.

Shares of Tibco, which has a market capitalization of more than $4 billion, closed Monday up 15 cents to $26.99. Hewlett-Packard rose 35 cents to $41.05.
