NEW YORK ( TheStreet) -- Deal activity drove small-cap action once again on Thursday as Global Defense Technology ( GTEC), which provides information technology to national security agencies, agreed to be acquired by Ares Management in a deal valued at $223.1 million or $24.25 per share. Shares were skyrocketing 50% to $24.15 Also, shares of healthcare services provider America Service Group ( ASGR) jumped 47% to $25.71 after Valitas Healthcare struck a deal to purchase the company for $250 million, or $26 per share. In other news, Superconductor Technologies ( SCON) rose 36% to $4.01 on volume of 8.3 million, nearly 12 times the stock's trailing three-month daily average of around 700,000. The catalyst for the sudden breakout wasn't clear but the shares have rallied since announcing the successful production of second-generation samples of its high temperature superconducting, or HTS, wire products on Feb. 2. Superconductor expects to begin deliveries of the samples soon.
Shares of Zagg ( ZAGG), which makes protective covers for the iPad and iPhone, were rallying 16% to $8.21. The stock fell steeply on Wednesday after Apple ( AAPL) unveiled its own cover for the iPad. Shares of BioSante Pharmaceuticals ( BPAX) were soaring 13% to $2.29 on heightened volumes after it said that its potential pancreatic cancer vaccine increased survival rates by more than 25% to a little over two years. Wendy's/Arby's ( WEN) saw its shares rise 7% to $5.08 after it reported narrower losses and said it expects sales at Wendy's to rise 1% to 3% this year after declining in the previous year. The stock of US Airways ( LCC) was flying high after the airline said it said that the demand environment was "exceptionally strong" and that it would be able to absorb the increase in fuel prices. Shares were up 6.4% at $8.47. Shares of Office Depot ( ODP) were up nearly 5% at $5.45. The stock has been touted as a
