Deciding when to charge your electric vehicle is now just a keyboard stroke away.

San Francisco-based Ecotality said its Blink electric vehicle charger interface can now be viewed and managed through home energy management software by Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ: CSCO).

Ecotality's car chargers communicate wirelessly with home computers. Electric vehicle owners can access information about their electric car battery through Cisco's software and set protocols for when to charge. This is important since electric vehicles can use electricity equivalent to adding an entire home to the electric grid. In neighborhoods where there are several electric vehicles, the increased electric demand could overwhelm infrastructure.

Utilities are hoping new tools like Ecotality's and Cisco's motivate electric vehicle owners to charge at night when energy demand is low to balance the added burden electric vehicles will inevitably place on the electric grid.
