Newly elected U.S. Rep. Scott Tipton of Colorado has been named chairman of the House Subcommittee on Agriculture, Energy and Trade.

The panel is a subcommittee of the House Small Business Committee, whose chairman, Rep. Sam Graves, R-Mo., named Tipton to lead the subcommittee.

⿿As the co-founder of a successful family-owned small business with international sales, Scott Tipton will bring fresh insight to our work to help American entrepreneurs compete in the global marketplace,⿝ Graves said in a statement.

The subcommittee focuses on ⿿policies that enhance rural economic growth, increasing America⿿s energy independence and ensuring that America⿿s small businesses can compete effectively in a global marketplace,⿝ according to its website. It provides oversight of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Army Corps of Engineers, among other agencies.

Tipton, R-Cortez, defeated Rep. John Salazar in November for Coloradoâ¿¿s 3rd Congressional District seat in Congress. The sprawling district stretches from the Western Slope across the San Luis Valley to Pueblo.

Tiptonâ¿¿s other subcommittee assignments:

â¿¢ House Agriculture Committee, Subcommittee on Conservation, Energy and Forestry.

â¿¢ House Natural Resources Committee, Subcommittee on Water and Power.

â¿¢ House Natural Resources Committee, Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests and Public Lands.
