The David Allen Co. in Raleigh has turned its attention from fancy marble and terrazzo floors to the roof of the companyâ¿¿s headquarters.

David Allen executives recently flipped the switch on a photovoltaic solar energy facility that it claims is one of the largest rooftop photovoltaic systems in the Triangle. It has 700 solar modules covering 23,000 square feet of the rooftop of the companyâ¿¿s warehouse and service building on Rush Street.

The company expects to offset about 35 percent of its current electric expanses with the 170-kilowatt system, which is also interconnected to Progress Energyâ¿¿s power grid. During times of low energy consumption, the system sends excess energy to the utility, and David Allen gets credit through deductions in its monthly energy bill.

The system was designed and developed by Peak Solar Investors LLC with Barnhill Contracting Company providing installation services. Peak Solar Investors LLC is a company created in 2010 by the principals of residential land development company Five Star Development of NC to help clients take advantage of tax incentives in the renewable energy market.

David Allen Co. is one of the countryâ¿¿s largest marble, granite, tile and terrazzo suppliers and contractors in the construction industry. It also has operations in Washington, D.C.; Columbia, S.C.; and Miami, Fla.
