NEW YORK ( TheStreet) -- Morgan Stanley ( MS) reported consensus-topping fourth-quarter earnings of 43 cents a share on revenue of $7.8 billion; analysts were expecting earnings of 35 cents a share on revenue of $7.35 billion.

The bank said fourth-quarter earnings were in part driven by strength at its investment banking business and progress in building its fixed-income business.

During the year-earlier fourth quarter, Morgan Stanley reported earnings of 29 cents a share on revenue of $6.8 billion.

Shares of Morgan Stanley were up 0.9% to $28.01 in early trading Thursday.

Ziopharm Oncology ( ZIOP) said European regulators have given a positive opinion for orphan drug designation on its cancer drug darinaparsin.

Shares of the company have popped by 7% to $5.99 in premarket trading.

Google ( GOOG) is slated to report fourth-quarter earnings after the closing bell. The Wall Street consensus estimate for the quarter is earnings of $8.09 a share on revenue of $6.06 billion vs. earnings of $6.79 a share on revenue of $4.95 billion the same time last year.

Google shares rose 0.4% to $634.20.

eBay's ( EBAY) fourth-quarter earnings topped Wall Street's expectations as online shopping buoyed the holiday season.

Shares of the company rose 2.2% to $29.75 in early trading.

U.S. regulators rejected MannKind's ( MNKD) Afrezza for the second time, telling MannKind to conduct at least two more clinical studies before resubmitting for approval.

MannKind shares have plunged 43.7% to $5.13.

UnitedHealth ( UNH) earned $1.04 billion, or 94 cents a share, in the fourth quarter on strong revenue growth from both of its business platforms, and said it expects 2011 revenue of about $100 billion.

Shares of UnitedHealth rose 1.08% to $41.

Wendy's ( WEN) has confirmed that it's looking to selling Arby's.

Shares of Wendy's rose 6.3% to $4.75 in premarket trading.

Huntington Bancshares ( HBAN) on Thursday reported fourth-quarter earnings that missed estimates by 3 cents after repaying a government bailout.

Huntington Bancshares fell 1.1% to $6.92 in premarket trading.
