The University of Texas has partnered with Konarka Technologies Inc. to develop plastic solar cell technology.

UT researchers backed by Department of Energy and National Science Foundation grants will work with the Lowell, Mass.-based manufacturer to develop new model systems for converting solar rays into energy.

Konarka achieved a world record recently for the efficiency of its plastic solar cell technology. The company said the systems are less costly than other kinds of solar and can be produced through a large-scale printing process. Plastic cells are also lighter and more flexible for use on items such as backpacks, laptop cases and building windows.

Konarka was founded in 2001 by technology entrepreneur Howard Berke and Nobel Prize winner Alan Heeger.
