New Mexico teachers can get a free lesson plan, DVD and other materials to help them inform middle and high school students about energy and water conservation.

The materials were created by Public Service Co. of New Mexico and the Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority in collaboration with local high school students. The DVD includes a humorous eight-minute video about the fundamental connection between electricity and water and the need to conserve both.

⿿POWER COUPLE ⿿ The Shocking True Story of Water and Electricity⿝ is designed to help teachers explain the ⿿energy-water nexus⿝ to students, said Melissa Walters Leymon, PNM senior program developer for energy efficiency, in a news release.

⿿These two critical resources are inextricably and reciprocally linked; the production of energy requires water, while the treatment and distribution of water is equally dependent upon readily available, low-cost energy,⿝ Walters Leymon said. ⿿Through education, we can help our children learn to conserve both for the future.⿝

The DVD features students from Sandia Prep, Amy Biehl High School and Albuquerque High School. It can be viewed on YouTube.

The DVD comes with a curriculum that can be incorporated into lesson plans. Educators statewide can order the materials for free by sending an e-mail request to
