KLD Energy Adds Space, Workers

By Austin Business Journal

Freshly-funded KLD Energy Technologies Inc. has hired 50 workers as part of expansion to a new headquarters and pilot production facility.

The Austin-based clean energy technology developer, founded in 2007, was awarded a $2.8 million commercialization award this week from the Texas Emerging Technology Fund. KLD is using the funds to accelerate the commercialization of its electric drive system and expand to new markets, officials said.

The company employs 55 workers, but plans to hire another 35 this year, according to a press release. It previously collected about $13 million in capital from dozens of angel investors and said it should reach profitability this year.

In addition to moving to a new 21,000-square-foot space in Austin, KLD also expanded its Morgan Hill, Calif. research facility and opened a sales and service office in China, Malaysia and Vietnam. In total, the company leases more than 30,000 square feet.
