Dole Food Company today announced that it has donated tens of thousands of packages of Dole Real Fruit Bites to the City of Detroit. A result of collaborative efforts with Detroit Mayor Dave Bing, the donation will help children in underserved communities learn to make healthy food choices and concentrate on nutrition during the holiday season. Dole Real Fruit Bites will be given to children visiting Detroit Recreation Centers throughout the city this December. Products will also be distributed to Gleaners Food Bank of Detroit and Forgotten Harvest of Detroit and Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries, which expect a dramatic increase in those families seeking food donations this winter. “Today’s donation in Detroit is part of an ongoing effort by Dole to encourage a healthy lifestyle in children that will carry over into adulthood,” said Marty Ordman, Vice President, Marketing & Communications for Dole. “We have developed efforts that complement First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move campaign and other programs that draw attention to the childhood obesity epidemic that is sweeping the nation, especially in underserved urban communities.” “Dole’s donation is a great help in our ongoing efforts to educate, motivate and assist the community to develop and maintain positive health and nutrition behaviors,” said Mayor Dave Bing. “As we continue to work to attract grocery stores and other healthy food options to Detroit, this gift is an important part of our commitment to making healthy food accessible to everyone in our city, particularly children in underserved communities.” Dole Real Fruit Bites, at only 80 calories a pack, are a nutritious and transportable snack from Dole Food Company. Each bite-size piece is made from real dried fruit chunks, coated with yogurt, and sprinkled with toasted whole grain oats and contains 15 percent of the total daily value of vitamin C.
