MEMPHIS, Tenn., Sept. 27, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- First Tennessee Bank, a subsidiary of First Horizon National Corp. (NYSE:FHN), has been named to the list of 100 Best Adoption-Friendly Workplaces in America by the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption. First Tennessee's adoption assistance benefit provides guidance and financial support to employees who choose to adopt. Support includes reimbursement for up to $7,500 in adoption-related expenses and up to one week of paid parental leave. Adoption assistance is among the family-friendly benefits First Tennessee offers employees. "Many families today are increasingly looking to the workplace for flexibility and support as they seek a work-life balance that best fits their individual situations," said John Daniel, First Horizon's chief human resources officer. "First Horizon recognizes the diverse needs of its employees and works to help them find solutions. We're proud of the esteemed Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption recognition of our efforts to make a difference for our employees where they need it most." First Horizon's adoption benefits were helpful to Kevin Howell, an employee with the company's capital markets subsidiary FTN Financial, and his wife Kara when they added two children to their family through adoption. "When my wife and I decided to build our family through adoption, my manager was very supportive," Howell said. "We found the reimbursement and paid parental leave the company offers extremely valuable during the adoption process." Today, more than 123,000 children are available for adoption in U.S. foster care. Most will spend nearly four years in the system before they are adopted. The release of the fourth annual Best Adoption-Friendly Workplaces List helps the foundation increase foster care adoption awareness while celebrating businesses that support adoptive families. Rankings for the Best Adoption Friendly Workplaces List are determined by an analysis of a company's adoption benefits available to employees who adopt, such as financial reimbursement and paid leave. The foundation compiled the results from survey data collected from nearly 500 U.S. employers and partnered with Employee Benefit News, a leading source of information for benefits decision-makers, to announce the winners.
Another way First Tennessee is providing support for children in foster care is through the donation of one of its former bank buildings to the South Memphis Alliance (SMA), a community development nonprofit. In collaboration with First Tennessee, SMA, Department of Children's Services and the Jim Casey Youth Opportunities Initiative, the building will be used as transitional housing for young people formerly in foster care that are between the ages of 18 and 24. The facility will provide the youth shelter and other supportive services to ensure a successful transition to adulthood.About the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption The Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption is a non-profit public charity dedicated to dramatically increasing the number of adoptions of foster care children in North America.
