Art Beattie, executive vice president, chief financial officer and treasurer of Alabama Power, will become Southern Co.â¿¿s CFO and executive vice president amid a top level retirement Tuesday.

Southern Co. Chairman, President and CEO David Ratcliffe announced he will retire Dec. 1. As part of the companyâ¿¿s succession and management transition plan, Ratcliffe announced a number of executive appointments including Beattieâ¿¿s promotion.

Beattie, 56, will oversee the companyâ¿¿s accounting, finance, tax, investor relations, treasury and risk management functions.

Thomas Fanning, 53, currently the companyâ¿¿s chief operating officer, has been named president of Southern Co. effective Aug. 1. Upon Ratcliffeâ¿¿s retirement, Fanning will become chairman and CEO of Southern Co.

Beattie joined the Southern Co. system at Alabama Power in 1976 as a junior accountant and progressed through a number of management and officer-level roles in the companyâ¿¿s accounting, finance, treasury and corporate governance organizations, a Southern Co. release said.
