NEW YORK ( TheStreet) -- Research In Motion ( RIMM) has something important to say and it's invited the press to hear it. The event is scheduled for 11 a.m. EDT Tuesday, August 3, in New York with AT&T ( T) serving as co-host. If one were to guess, it looks like the hotly-anticipated BlackBerry touchscreen slider phone known in most circles as the Talladega is ready for introduction. The phone is expected to be the first to run on the new BlackBerry OS 6, an application and Web friendly operating system that has been lacking at RIM.
In the past two years, RIM has been getting hammered by Apple's ( AAPL) iPhone and a series of Google ( GOOG) Android phones from Motorola ( MOT) and HTC. The company has promised analysts and investors that they will be impressed by the new phones, but fears of delays and increased competition have knocked RIM's share price down 21% this year. --Written by Scott Moritz in New York.
