The Kentucky Public Service Commission has approved Shelby Energy Cooperative Inc.â¿¿s first general rate increase since 1983.

Shelby Energy sought PSC permission to have all of its customers consolidated into one rate class.

Previously, the utility had regular energy customers and customers who had opted for a rate that allowed Shelby Energy to shut off their water heaters or air conditioners at peak energy-consumption periods.

A typical Shelby Energy customer now will pay an additional $3, or about 2 percent, per month, according to a news release issued by the PSC.

The increase will be steeper for customers who had been on the energy-conservation plan. They will see an average increase of $15.81, or about 12 percent, per month, according to the PSC.

The rate hike is expected to help Shelby Energy increase its annual revenue by $1.9 million, or about 5.2 percent.

Shelby Energy has about 15,300 residential and commercial customers in Shelby, Anderson, Carroll, Franklin, Henry, Jefferson, Oldham, Owen, Spencer and Trimble counties. It is one of 16 distribution cooperatives that own and purchase power from the East Kentucky Power Cooperative.
