Westar Energy Inc. on Friday announced it is seeking bids from renewable energy developers for up to 200 megawatts of renewable resources the company hopes to add by late 2012.

Westar (NYSE: WR) obtained the rights earlier this year to develop the Ironwood Wind Farm in southwest Kansas. Under its current request for proposals, Westar will offer a portion of the land rights at Ironwood to the developer through one or more power purchase agreements

Proposals are due Sept. 2. The RFP can be found here.

The company said if a better site is proposed during the bid process that it will keep the Ironwood site for future development.

⿿Renewable energy helps us meet our customers⿿ needs while protecting the environment and plays an important role in our generation portfolio,⿝ Westar CEO Bill Moore said in a news release. ⿿Renewables can⿿t do it alone, and it takes our entire mix of coal and natural gas plants, our share of a nuclear plant, plus energy efficiency programs to provide reliable electric service. Proper transmission capacity supports that reliability for our customers and we work hard to ensure we can deliver renewable energy to them.⿝

The company said it plans to select a developer by the end of the year.
