Austin gas prices fell for the third consecutive week, dropping 1 cent to $2.55 a gallon of unleaded gasoline, AAA Texas reported Thursday.

Central Texas fuel prices have been consistently sliding through the summer months, save for a brief 4 cent increase about four weeks ago. Current prices are still about 21 cents more than drivers paid for regular unleaded gas the same week last year.

Most Texas cities prices were stable from last week, or dropped 1 cent. Corpus Christi was the only city were the amount fell 2 cents. The statewide average was unchanged at about $2.56, compared with the national $2.72 a gallon average.

Houston drivers paid the least in Texas for gas this week, about $2.51, while El Paso motorists paid the most, about $2.69.
