San Antonio Water System is planning on retrofitting more than 200 homes on the cityâ¿¿s East Side this summer through its Conservation Makeover program.

The free retrofit program provides qualified homeowners with efficient toilets and water fixtures.

As part of the program, SAWS conducts a free assessment for homeowners to identify water leaks and less-than-water friendly fixtures. SAWS then contracts with a licensed plumber to retrofit the homes, install high efficiency fixtures and repairing minor water leaks. Homeowners could qualify for toilets, showerheads and faucet aerators. High-efficiency toilets can save a homeowner up to 12,500 gallons of water each year. Water-saving showerheads and faucet aerators could conserve an additional 10,850 gallons annually.

Participation in the program is based on income. All services and fixtures are provided free to qualified customers.

SAWS is working with City Councilwoman Ivy Taylor to assist homeowners on the East Side.

⿿With Councilwoman Taylor⿿s support, SAWS is upgrading homes with toilets and fixtures that use less water, saving homeowners money on their water bill,⿝ says SAWS Vice President of Public Affairs Greg Flores. ⿿Conservation is a key component of our community⿿s water management plan, and with programs like this everyone can take part in conserving water for our future.⿝
