Tirupati has become the first city in India to join Creeâ¿¿s LED City initiative, the Durham company announced Monday.

LED City is an international program that supports municipal lighting applications using energy-efficient light-emitting diodes, or LEDs. Tirupati is home to the Venkateswara Swamy temple, which hosts between 50,000 and 100,000 pilgrims each day. The city has converted more than 140 street lights to LED fixtures to illuminate major roadways. Tirupati estimates LEDs save the city about $6,500 a month in electricity costs.

Cities participating in LED City share best practices about municipal LED lighting. Participants are not required to purchase Cree products. Cities participating in the initiative include Raleigh, Boston, Toronto and Gwangju, South Korea.

Cree (Nasdaq: CREE) employs about 1,600 in the Triangle.
