Mote Marine Laboratory, in collaboration with the Oceana conservation organization and the National Resources Defense Council, launched an underwater robot off the Florida Keys.

The robot â¿¿ named Waldo â¿¿ will sample the undersea water column and transmit information to researchers via satellite every three hours, a release said.

Mote, based in Sarasota, will provide local Keys governments information if oil is detected to enable response activation for protecting ecological resources.

Waldo was launched from Moteâ¿¿s field facility on Summerland Key.
