The city of Hillsboro has been recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as an EPA Green Power Community, becoming the 14th community in Oregon and 30th in the nation to receive the designation.

The EPA extends the honor to communities that show their commitment to environmental sustainability by purchasing renewable energy in amounts that meet or exceed the federal agencyâ¿¿s purchase requirements.

The city also announced the results of its Green Power Challenge. Hillsboro business and residential electricity customers have surpassed the challenge goal of 300 new renewable power sign-ups set by the city council. The community-wide challenge, announced in March, resulted in 731 new sign-ups for renewable energy from Portland General Electric Co.

Those included 51 businesses.
