First Wind broke ground Tuesday on the only utility-scale wind-energy project on Oahu.

Upon completion, the Kahuku Wind Project will have the capacity to generate enough renewable energy to power 7,700 Oahu homes.

First Wind, a private company based in Boston, expects to complete arrangements soon for a $117 million loan guarantee from the U.S. Department of Energy.

Located west of Kahuku in the hills near Charlie Road on Oahuâ¿¿s North Shore, the Kahuku Wind Project will consist of a dozen 2.5-megawatt wind turbines and energy-storage facilities.
