Last month, Washington Gas was presented with the Partners Against Leukemia and Lymphoma Award by the National Capital Area Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) for the company’s participation in the Light The Night Walk. This award was given to two companies nationwide in recognition of over a decade of commitment to raising money to help find a cure for blood cancers. "Recently, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society presented Washington Gas with a prestigious national award recognizing over 10 years of supporting the fight against these types of blood cancers. Receiving this award has significant personal meaning as my family was touched by this terrible disease, with the loss of my brother," said Doug Staebler, Vice President of Operations, Engineering & Marketing. Washington Gas has been one of the top five performing corporate sponsors since it began fundraising efforts for LLS in 2000, contributing $321,000 over the last 10 years. Of those contributions, $261,000 was raised by Washington Gas employees and $60,000 was donated by the company. "The commitment of our employees and company is evident through the continued, focused support of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I carry the hope that one day a cure for all types of leukemia and lymphoma will be found," continued Staebler. In 2009, the Washington, D.C. Light The Night Walk generated $615,000. Overall, the National Capital Area Chapter raised more than $1.8 million for lifesaving cancer research through its five walks held in the Washington metropolitan area.
