Gov. Charlie Crist called a special session of the Florida Legislature to consider a constitutional amendment banning offshore drilling.

The session is scheduled for July 20 through July 23.

In his special session proclamation, Crist noted that the Deepwater Horizon oil spill has shown the magnitude of damage spills can cause to ecosystems and communities.

The session is necessary to give Florida residents the opportunity to vote to amend the constitution in the November general election.

The Legislature will consider a joint resolution prohibiting oil exploration beneath all Florida waters between the mean high water line along the coastline to the seaward limits of the stateâ¿¿s boundaries.
