A major oil and gas trade group for the Rocky Mountains â¿¿ the Independent Petroleum Association of Mountain States â¿¿ is changing its name to the Western Energy Alliance.

A new website,, has been created by IPAMS, and is scheduled to go live â¿¿ along with an official announcement of the name change â¿¿ on July 12, according to an IPAMS spokesman.

⿿We are a 36-year-old organization that has built a national reputation by working constructively with government, academia and local communities,⿝ Marc Smith, IPAMS executive director, said in a statement.

Smith will continue as executive director of the Western Energy Alliance.

⿿With a name that better reflects who we are, we are in a better position to speak for the men and women who are working everyday to ensure that our nation has the energy it needs. Our organization is an alliance of people and companies dedicated to responsible energy development and job creation in the West,⿝ Smith said.

Formed in 1974, IPAMS is a nonprofit trade group that represents 430 companies involved in the natural gas industry in the Rocky Mountains.
