Houston retained the cheapest gasoline price title this week as crude oil prices dropped to $72 a barrel, according to AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch.

The average price of unleaded regular gasoline in Houston was the same as last week â¿¿ $2.57. Motorists in El Paso are paying the most at $2.72, which is up three cents from last week.

Galveston/Texas City prices were also stable at an average of $2.61 per gallon.

Across the state, the average gallon of gasoline is $2.61 â¿¿ also unchanged from last week. Meanwhile, the national average is $2.75 a gallon.

AAA said that Hurricane Alex did not impact the nationâ¿¿s gasoline production, but it might affect the amount of travel as rain covers practically the whole state of Texas, according to The Weather Channel. Forecasts call for a rainy Independence Day weekend in Houston.

Dan Ronan, spokesman for AAA Texas, said that the organization was not able to make predictions on if the hurricane and subsequent rain was affecting travel.

AAA before the storm projected that the number of Texans traveling on vacation this holiday weekend to increase 14.4 percent from 2009 with about 2.43 million people taking a trip away from home. Last year 2.12 million Texans traveled during the Fourth of July holiday.
