NEW YORK ( TheStreet) -- Video game sales fell 5% in May as demand weakened for consoles.

Even though sales dropped to $823.5 million from $865.7 million last year, according to the NPD Group, it was still the third best May on record. Hardware sales plunged 20% to $241.5 million, while software sales gained 4% to $466.3 million. Accessories also grew 3% to $115.7 million.

Nintendo's Wii console was the top selling platform for the month, followed by Microsoft's ( MSFT) Xbox 360 and Sony's ( SNE) Playstation 3.

Take-Two Interactive Software's ( TTWO) Red Dead Redemption was the top game in the month, selling 1.5 million units.
