In an effort to promote sustainable operations at Tampa International Airport, the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority board is planning to advertise for a company to develop a compressed natural gas fuel station near the airport.

CNG is a cleaner-burning fossil fuel alternative to gasoline, diesel and propane fuel.

About 20 airports around the United States currently have CNG stations.

The developer would design, construct, own and operate the CNG station at a site at the north end of West Shore Boulevard northeast of the airport.

The company would pay an annual rent of $103,237, which would amount to $2.2 million over a 20-year agreement.

Other sustainable measures at TIA include use of reclaimed water for landscaping, a recycling program, LED lighting retrofits and the addition of about 19 battery electric vehicles to the airportâ¿¿s fleet.
