NEW YORK ( TheStreet) -- Sprint's ( S - Get Report) HTC EVO debut has drawn a crowd.

Judging by at least one store in lower Manhattan, the 4G superphone from HTC has attracted more than a few eager buyers. The line outside the Sprint store on Broadway wrapped around the corner Friday morning for the EVO sales kickoff.

The rousing reception is good news for Sprint, which has seen millions of customer defections over the past two years as AT&T's ( T - Get Report) Apple ( AAPL - Get Report) iPhone and Verizon's ( VZ - Get Report) host of Google ( GOOG Androids and Research In Motion ( RIMM BlackBerries won fans.

The HTC EVO has caught the attention of gadget watchers with its industry-leading features like a huge 4.3-inch touchscreen, the fast 1-gigahertz Qualcomm ( QCOM Snapdragon processor and a WiMax-powered 4G data connection.

"It's not like Apple where you wait in line five days, but it should be good," said one would-be EVO buyer queued up outside the Broadway Sprint store.

Sprint needs a big initial showing since the EVO has only three days of limelight before Apple's expected unveiling of the newly redesigned iPhone Monday.

Sprint shares were unchanged despite a broad market selloff in the wake of a weak Federal jobs report Friday.
