Level 3 Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: LVLT) today announced it provided content delivery network (CDN) services to support live online streaming of the 2010 Indianapolis 500 race on May 30. The streaming is part of a deal with the IZOD IndyCar Series to stream all IZOD IndyCar Series races in 2010.

Under the terms of the contract with the IZOD IndyCar Series, Level 3 provided live streaming of the May 30 race to viewers via the IZOD IndyCar Series website, www.indycar.com. The race was streamed in high-definition using Level 3’s advanced CDN platform, which is backed by the company’s Tier 1 Internet backbone and is designed to support high levels of streaming technology for leading media formats.

“Viewership for racing has grown tremendously over the past few years, so we wanted to make sure that for the biggest race of the year, fans everywhere had the chance to experience the same high-quality racing action whether they were watching from the stands or from the Web,” said Jarrod Krisiloff, director of New Media & Consumer Strategies for Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which owns the IZOD IndyCar Series. “Viewers of the live stream were able to see not just the race itself, but live, in-car video feeds, backed by the quality and reliability of the Level 3 network.”

Video feeds of the race included race coverage as well as on-track and in-car footage, allowing viewers to see from the drivers’ perspective in real-time. In addition to the Indianapolis 500, Level 3 will provide streaming for the 11 remaining IZOD IndyCar Series races in 2010.

“As content owners look for new, higher-quality options for providing live events to viewers, Level 3 is poised to make the process as simple as possible, from content capture to consumption,” said Peter Neill, senior vice president of Content Markets at Level 3. “For a big race like the Indianapolis 500, it’s critical that the network be equipped to handle the potential traffic spike as race fans from around the world tune in, and the Level 3 CDN was built to accommodate this type of demand while providing a seamless, HD-quality experience for the viewers.”

By providing services specifically designed to effectively manage the process of live event delivery, Level 3 makes it easier for broadcasters and other content providers to share event content via the Web or connected devices with new audiences.
