This spring, the Washington Area Fuel Fund (WAFF) surpassed $20 million in contributions to local individuals and families in need of energy assistance. Since its inception in 1983, WAFF has provided assistance to more than 236,000 metropolitan area residents.

The fund’s mission is to provide fuel assistance to heat the homes of Washington area residents experiencing financial hardship. WAFF pays for all types of fuel to heat homes and helps stabilize families faced with unexpected crises, providing area residents with a critical, social safety net.

“WAFF is the cornerstone of our company’s philanthropic efforts in the communities we serve,” said Eric C. Grant, Vice President of Corporate Relations for Washington Gas. “This $20 million milestone was achieved through the combined efforts of Washington Gas and The Salvation Army coupled with consistent generosity of customers, friends, families, employees and countless individuals across the area."

While WAFF has helped keep hundreds of thousands warm for more than a generation, the number of applicants continues to grow each winter. Washington Gas is committed to continuing this program for Washington area residents in need, paying for all administrative fees so that 100 percent of all WAFF donations go directly to those who need assistance.

The Salvation Army, which administers WAFF, disburses the funds through its 11 offices located throughout the Washington metropolitan area. “This is truly a remarkable achievement for a fuel fund that receives no government support,” adds Ernest Holtz, Director of Divisional Development and Planning for The Salvation Army. “Citizens in the region have been so supportive throughout the years. This accomplishment is a tribute to their compassion for their less fortunate neighbors.”
