NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- The safest bet for Mother's Day gifts these days is no longer just the traditional choice of pretty Mother's Day flower arrangements; sons and daughters the world over are apparently taking the whole thing a step further by choosing arrangements that their mothers can not only look at and admire, but also eat.

That, at least, is the story that the numbers are telling. Case in point: 1-800 Flowers ( FLWS - Get Report) is in a 5-year search-volume decline and is quickly losing market share in the Mother's Day gift market, while Edible Arrangements is aggressively growing market share with no signs of slowing down.

Indeed, as consumers become increasingly discerning and health-conscious, the nutritional value of Edible Arrangements' healthy creations may also be a source of appeal.

With more than 953 locations operating or coming soon worldwide, the company sculpts its bouquets out of "premium fruit" for any occasion. Customers can also choose to have them dipped in chocolate -- an admittedly less health-conscious option.

One last note: Mother's Day -- for those of you who need reminding -- is just around the corner, on May 9.
