Furmanite Corporation (NYSE: FRM) today announced that the company earned the Shell 2009 Contractor HSE Award – For Safety Excellence, presented by Shell Deer Park. Shell Deer Park, near Houston, Texas, is home to the sixth largest refinery in the United States, with a crude capacity of 340,000 barrels a day. This award recognizes Furmanite’s health, safety and environmental (HSE) performance, which is a hallmark of Furmanite’s service across the United States and around the world.

Joseph E. Milliron, president and chief operating officer of Furmanite Corporation, said: “We are very pleased to receive this coveted award from Shell. This recognition underscores the fact that Furmanite is known worldwide for our outstanding HSE record. We know that our HSE performance is even more important and valued in the current environment, given the heightened concerns as a result of recent tragedies at domestic refineries and the offshore rig accident in the Gulf of Mexico.”

Furmanite’s health, safety and environmental performance in the U.S. consistently exceeds OSHA standards. In the U.S., the mandated requirements for Furmanite to operate in its primary customer locations are an EMR (Experience Modification Rating) of 1.0 or less, and a TRIR (Total Recordable Incident Rate) of 2.0 or less. Furmanite performs well below the mandated levels, with an EMR of 0.55 and a TRIR of 0.49

Furmanite also measures HSE performance in each of its operations around the world, targeting the same standards as those achieved in the United States. In the United Kingdom, Furmanite’s HSE performance exceeds the mandated requirements of the Health and Safety Executive and Environment Agency. In Europe, Furmanite has long held the approved certification from Veiligheids Checklist Aannemers for the company’s HSE standards and performance. In Malaysia and Singapore, Furmanite is certified on the Safety Contractor Checklist, accredited by SGS International Certification Services for Quality Management of Safety. The International Safety Organization (ISO), a network of national standards institutes from 161 countries, has certified Furmanite as ISO 9001:2008 for its adherence to the highest quality standards.

Mr. Milliron concluded: “Here in the U.S. and around the world, our customers count on us to bring the proven skills and expertise that ensure our work is conducted to the highest standards. By making safety, health and environment our core values and commitment at every level of the company, we have achieved and maintained our record of outstanding HSE performance in every industry sector that we serve.”
