Readers of will join The Root’s editorial staff and leading female achievers in the fields of media, politics, and policy at an event series entitled Young, Fabulous and Female that kicks off this week in Washington, DC. The inaugural event will take place this Thursday, April 22, at The Washington Post Auditorium. Young, Fabulous and Female is presented by The Root and sponsored exclusively by Pepsi “We Inspire.”

At Thursday’s Young, Fabulous and Female event, The Root will present a panel discussion featuring prominent female voices including Angela Rye, Senior Counsel to the Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee; Malika Saada Saar, The Rebecca Project; Erica Williams, Center For American Policy and Progress 2050; and Donna Byrd, publisher of The Root. Anji Corley of WPGC radio will moderate.

Thursday’s panel will address the following critical questions: Where will the next crop of black female pace-setters and game changers come from, and how will they make a difference in the world? Will their successes help to change popular images and stereotypes of black women? Are the current leading women visible enough role models for black girls today? What must they – and we—do to increase the ranks of the young, fabulous, and female within the African American community? Panelists will also answer questions posed by the audience. A cocktail reception will follow.

“As the go-to African American news site, The Root is in a unique position to engage our community in issues that really matter,” said Joel Dreyfuss, managing editor of The Root. “We’re thrilled to present a live event series of such significance, and are looking forward to discussing with our readers and panelists ways to elevate the profiles of young, African American women.”

Thursday’s event will take place from 6:30 to 8 PM. A second Young, Fabulous and Female event is slated to take place in New York City on May 18 at the Alvin Ailey studios.
