NEW YORK ( TheStreet) -- Asian stocks closed with strong gains Monday after the U.S. jobs report Friday came in better than expected.

In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 stock average rose 2.1% to 10,585.92, while the Hang Seng index in Hong Kong rose nearly 2%.

Stocks in London, Frankfurt and Paris were slightly lower Monday after being higher earlier in the session.

Employers in the U.S. shed fewer jobs than expected in February and the unemployment rate was unchanged at 9.7%.

The jobs report Friday lifted U.S. stocks, sending the Dow Jones Industrial Average up 1.2% and the S&P 500 up 1.4%.

Premarket futures suggested stocks would move lower Monday when Wall Street opens.
