ISSAQUAH, Wash. ( TheStreet) -- Costco Wholesale ( COST) said same-store sales in December rose 9%, while international same sales gained 25%.

Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expected Costco to post a same-store sales increase in December of 7.9%.

Costco, the warehouse retailer, said total sales for the five weeks ended Jan. 3 rose 11% to $8.26 billion.

In December, Costco's U.S. same-store sales rose 5%.

Costco said it benefited in the month from higher gas prices and stronger foreign currencies.

Excluding these factors, December same-store sales in the U.S. rose 2%, and international same sales gained 10%.
