AT&T ( T) had been the main backer of the PGA tournament Woods hosted every July.

AT&T was also the presenting sponsor of Woods' charity event, "TigerJam," but the contract for that arrangement has expired.

Finally, prior to the tournament, The New York Times confirmed that AT&T was able to back out of its contract with Woods without paying the millions of dollars the company owed him.
