Grocery stocks were mixed Wednesday after an earlier rally in the broader market fizzled.

Shares of Wal-Mart were recently losing 0.1% to $51.01 after the retailer announced it would try to tap the teen market with its new a new interior decorating line called "Your Zone."

Costco ( COST), meanwhile, was down 0.4% to $46.18, and BJ's Wholesale Club ( BJ) was up 0.4% to $31.11.

Elsewhere:

  • Whole Foods (WFMI) was gaining 2.1% to $17.10.
  • Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. (GAP) also was up, recently rising 1.8% to $6.12.
  • Winn Dixie (WINN) was up 0.1% to $9.79.
  • Kroger (KR) shares were up 2.2% to $21.57.
  • Safeway (SWY) was up 1% to $20.73.
  • SuperValu (SVU) was down 0.9% to $15.15.
