The AIG ( AIG) and Madoff scandals dominated headlines for most the day on Wednesday until the Federal Reserve, in its most recent effort to help the economy, announced a plan to buy $300 billion in long-term Treasury bonds.

The news quickly sent markets straight up after an otherwise down day of trading.

And in tech news, shares of Sun Microsystems ( JAVA) soared on reports that IBM ( IBM) might take over the computer server and software maker. The acquisition would expand IBM's operations and assist as it competes against Cisco ( CSCO) and Hewlett-Packard ( HPQ) for market share.
