In line with an early surge in the broader market, grocery stocks were primarily on the plus side Wednesday.

Costco ( COST) was rising 0.9% to $41.07 despite having posted a second-quarter profit that fell 27% from the same period a year earlier.

BJ's Wholesale Club ( BJ), meanwhile, reported a 5% increase in profit for its fiscal fourth quarter. Shares subsequently rose 8.8% to $29.85.

  • Kroger (KR) was up 3.1% to $20.82.
  • Winn-Dixie (WINN) was down 0.2% to $9.37.
  • Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. (GAP) was up 8.8% to $3.58.
  • Whole Foods Market (WFMI) was up 5.2% to $12.26.
  • Supervalu (SVU) was up 5.8% to $16.07.
  • Wal-Mart (WMT) was up 3.1% to $48.86.
