Motorola's ( MOT) new phones aren't exactly new -- and certainly not the instant salvation investors were looking for from the fallen phone king. The company unveiled two new versions of its Rizr and Rokr lines at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The slide-open Moto Z10, the latest take on the Rizr, is billed as a video phone that lets the user shoot, edit and send videos to sites like Google's ( GOOG) YouTube. The other phone is the familiar Rokr, but refashioned with a keypad that changes from phone numbers to music controls.
Investors have pined for something huge out of Motorola's design team to restore the company's lost glory in the wake of the Razr's phenomenal success and costly decline. Razr's fall from fashion caused nearly two years of sales shortfalls at Motorola, dropping the phone giant to No. 3 behind Nokia ( NOK) and Samsung. The post-Razr collapse also took its toll in the management ranks. Ed Zander was relieved of his CEO duties late last year, with Chief Operating Officer Greg Brown taking the helm. Motorola also replaced its CFO and its handset chief. New phone head Stu Reed says he's focused on offering many different phones for different types of customers. "We want to sell a broad portfolio. We don't want to be dependent on one phone ever again. We're not about one phone," Reed said in an interview Sunday with Reuters at CES. In other words, don't expect a Razr-like repeat. Motorola shares rose a nickel to $15.12 in premarket trading Monday.
