Buy SunTrust ( STI), Jim Cramer said Thursday on CNBC's Stop Trading! segment.

Cramer said solid results out of the Atlanta bank and some other second-tier institutions such as PNC ( PNC), Bank of New York ( BK) and State Street ( STT) show that "not every bank is going down."

Cramer also defended Bank of America's ( BAC) chief despite Thursday's 31% drop in third-quarter earnings, saying, "I believe in Ken Lewis." He pointed to the bank's solid China investments and said BofA's results were pulled down by huge writeoffs in home equity loans -- an area that was "a disaster for everybody" across the sector, Cramer said.

Cramer said JPMorgan Chase ( JPM) chief Jamie Dimon did less of a bad job than other bank CEOs, but he dismissed that comment as "damning with faint praise."
At the time of publication, Cramer had no positions in stocks mentioned.
