OptionsXpress ( OXPS) shares jumped 4.6% after the company reported a 24% gain in fourth-quarter profit. The online broker said it earned $19.4 million, or 31 cents a share, compared to $15.6 million, or 25 cents a share, a year ago. Earnings exceeded the Thomson Financial estimate of 29 cents a share. The stock rose $1.05 to $23.69.

E*Trade ( ETFC) rose after it was added to the Nasdaq Financial 100 index. E*Trade shares added 62 cents, or 2.6%, to $24.46.

W Holdings ( WHI) fell after reporting a 40% slide in quarterly profit. The Puerto Rico-based lender earned $17.9 million, or a nickel a share, compared to $30.2 million, or 12 cents a share, a year ago. Analysts were looking for 11 cents. Shares were 32 cents, or 9%, to $5.27.

Allstate ( ALL) fell after fourth-quarter earnings missed analyst expectations. The insurer earned $1.12 billion, or $1.78 a share, compared to $975 million, or $1.49 a share. But analysts were looking for $1.84 a share. The stock fell $3.69, or 5.8%, to $60.31.

Arthur J. Gallagher ( AJG) fell, even after the insurance broker reported a big gain in fourth-quarter profit. In the quarter, the firm earned $24.6 million, or 25 cents a cents, up from $7.5 million, or 8 cents a share. On an operating basis, the firm earned $54.6 million cents a share. Analysts were looking for 43 cents a share. The stock fell 58 cents, or 2%, to $28.59.
