Commodity-related exchange-traded funds were the big winners of Tuesday's session. The newly benchmarked March crude oil futures contract was surging by $2.46 to $55.04 a barrel. Gold jumped $11.80 to close at $645.90 an ounce, and silver was up 26 cents at $13.26 an ounce.

The iPath Goldman Sachs Crude Oil ( OIL) ETF was recently jumping 4.4% to $33.78. The United States Oil ( USO) ETF was adding 4.1% to $45.65. The iShares Dow Jones U.S. Oil & Gas Exploration Index ( IEO) ETF was gaining 3.2% to $48.36, and the Oil Services HOLDRs ( OIH) was tacking on 3% to $136.27.

The Market Vectors Gold Miners ( GDX) ETF was higher by 4.2% to $38.84, while the iShares Silver Trust ( SLV) ETF was gaining 2.4% to $131.81. The streetTRACKS Gold Shares ( GLD) ETF was rising 2.2% to $64.08.

The iShares Dow Jones US Aerospace & Defense ( ITA) ETF was also one of the session's winners, rising 2.4% as holding Precision Castparts ( PCP) was higher by 6.8% following a strong fourth-quarter profit report. The ETF was gaining $1.30 to $54.91.

On the other hand, the Broadband HOLDRs ( BDH) was one of the biggest losers. Holding Nortel ( NT) was falling 3.2%, sinking the ETF by 25 cents, or 1.6%, to $15.26.

The B2B Internet HOLDRs ( BHH) ETF was also losing ground as holding Checkfree ( CKFR) was shedding 4%. The ETF was off 6 cents, or 2.8%, to $2.10.

The Biotech HOLDRs ( BBH) was falling 1.3% as Biogen Idec ( BIIB) was lower by 2.5%. The ETF was losing $2.46 to $194.38.
