EMC ( EMC) beat fourth-quarter targets and raised the bar for 2007.

The Hopkinton, Mass., information technology outfit made $389 million, or 18 cents a share, for the quarter ended Dec. 31, up from the year-ago $148 million, or 6 cents a share. Excluding certain items, latest-quarter earnings were 17 cents a share, a penny ahead of the Thomson Financial analyst consensus estimate.

Revenue rose 19% from a year ago to $3.22 billion, beating the $3.17 billion Thomson Financial target.

The company said it expects to make 64 cents a share for 2007 on revenue of $12.7 billion. Analysts were looking for a 63-cent profit on sales of $12.65 billion.

Shares rose 23 cents early Tuesday to $13.70.
