The Biotech HOLDRs ( BBH) ETF was one of Thursday's best performers, rising 2.6% as holding Genzyme ( GENZ) was climbing nearly 6%. The ETF was up $4.73 to $188.40.

The Broadband HOLDRs ( BDH) ETF was also one of Thursday's winners. Holding Qualcomm ( QCOM) rose 4.9%, boosting the ETF by 37 cents, or 2.4%, to $16.09.

Gains of 3.5% or more in eBay ( EBAY) and Yahoo! ( YHOO) lifted the Internet HOLDRs ( HHH). The ETF was gaining $1.08, or 2.1%, to $53.61.

On the flipside, oil-related stocks slumped as the February crude contract sank below the $56 a barrel level following a better-than-expected supply report from the Energy Department. Crude supplies fell by 1.3 million barrels, while distillates rose by 2 million barrels and gasoline stocks were higher by 5.6 million barrels.

The Oil Services HOLDRs ( OIH) ETF was losing 2.8% to $129.61. The iShares Dow Jones U.S. Oil Equipment Index ( IEZ) ETF was losing 2.8% to $41.99. The SPDR Oil & Gas Equipment & Services ( XES) ETF was recently down 2.6% to $27.31.

ETFs tracking precious metals were also among the worst decliners Thursday as gold finished the session with losses. The Market Vectors Gold Miners ( GDX) ETF was losing 2.2% to $37.59. The streetTRACKS Gold Shares ( GLD) ETF was off by 1% to $61.67. The SPDR Metals & Mining ( XME) ETF was giving back 1% to $47.20.
