Wal-Mart (WMT) posted a 1.6% same-store sales gain for December and reaffirmed guidance for the quarter ending this month.

The Bentonville, Ark., retail giant said sales in established stores rose 1.3% at Wal-Mart locations and 3.5% at Sam's Club stores, excluding gasoline sales. The company said the Wal-Mart Stores Division had a very strong performance in electronics and the grocery business, including pets, household chemicals, paper goods, health and beauty, food and pharmacy.

Wal-Mart said apparel sales were soft and that warm weather hit sales of winter seasonal items like coats.

The company said it expects a 1%-2% gain in same-store sales for January and reaffirmed its fourth-quarter earnings forecast of 88 to 92 cents a share.
