The iShares Dow Jones Transportation Average ( IYT) ETF was Wednesday's best performer as oil plummeted 4.1%, losing $2.50 to close at $58.55. Meanwhile, holding Ryder System ( R) jumped 4.4%. The ETF was tacking on $2.08, or 2.5%, to $83.86. The Broadband HOLDRs ( BDH) ETF was also one of the day's winners. Holding Tellabs ( TLAB) jumped 7%, boosting the ETF by 30 cents, or 1.9%, to $16.02. Retailers were performing well a day before December same-store sales results were to be posted. The SPDR Retail ( XRT) ETF was higher as Pacific Sunwear ( PSUN) and Tween Brands ( TWB) added more than 5%. The SPDR Retail ETF was gaining 69 cents, or 1.7%, to $41.30. Elsewhere, the PowerShares Dynamic Retail ( PMR) ETF was rising by 1.9% to $19.95, and the Retail HOLDRs ( RTH) was higher by 1.7% to $101.03. On the flipside, oil-related stocks slumped. The SPDR Oil & Gas Equipment & Services ( XES) ETF was recently down 4.5% to $28.11. The iShares Dow Jones U.S. Oil Equipment Index ( IEZ) ETF was losing 4.2% to $43.31. The Oil Services HOLDRs ( OIH) was losing 4.2% to $133.84. ETFs tracking precious metals were also among the worst decliners. Both gold and silver futures finished the session with losses. The Market Vectors Gold Miners ( GDX) ETF was losing 3.1% to $38.67. The SPDR Metals & Mining ( XME) ETF was giving back 2.4% to $47.88, and the iShares Silver Trust ( SLV) ETF was lower by 2.4% to $125.60. The streetTRACKS Gold Shares ( GLD) ETF was off by 1.4% to $62.34.
