BOMBAY -- Bombay stocks gave back some of Wednesday's gains in a quiet session Thursday, with the BSE Sensex index dropping 0.6%.

The Sensex dropped 71 points to close at 10,858.50, a day after traders pushed the index up 3.1% in response to apparent terror attacks on the financial capital's rail system.

On Thursday, laggards on the index were HDFC, which lost 3.1%, Bharati, down 3%, and Wirpo ( WIT), off 2.6%.

Gainers were HLL, which rose 2.6%, Grasim, up 2.1%, and Cipla, higher by 1.8%.

UTI Bank dropped 1.1% after it reported a 30% rise in its first-quarter profit.
